Teacher dismissed for allowing pupils to listen to iPod music in the class

A teacher has been dismissed from her classroom for allowing her students to listen to music on their iPods.

Suzanne Harwood had been made subject to a number of complaints from her colleagues as well as students.

It was mentioned at a disciplinary hearing that Harwood, who taught English, could not control her classes in Aberdeen’s Hazlehead Academy and could not manage the behavior of her pupils.

In 2010, during the course of a lesson, Harwood wrongly sanctioned a pupil, who had raised hand asking for help and another pupil, who was closing a window.

Harwood did not attend the disciplinary committee hearing at Edinburgh this Monday.

But from evidence provided by Alison Murison, the head teacher and the other teachers, a rare decision was taken by the council and the name of Harwood was struck of the register from gross professional incompetence.
